President Rafael Correa is no stranger to power clashes. He took
on the national assembly when he came to power in 2007 and won. He is now taking
on the judiciary. The conviction last week of six police officers involved in
the infamous police mutiny on 30 September 2010 has been the catalyst for a remarkable
internal judicial dispute. These are the first men to be found guilty of
participation in what Correa insists was a coup attempt. Their convictions
released months of latent tension over the Correa administration's sweeping
judicial reform proposal, which was approved in a national referendum on 7 May
[WR-11-19].
